Mainie Jellett

1897-1944

Born in Dublin in 1897, Mainie Jellett studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School and received some drawing and painting lessons from Elizabeth Yeats before leaving for London at 18 to study under Walter Sickert. In 1921 the artist travelled to Paris and there, she met Evie Hone, both artists studied under cubists artists Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. Both artists maintained their links with Dublin visiting Paris during the summer months. Jellett’s style of painting was considered very radical and was misunderstood in Dublin art circles.Composition with 3 Elements, demonstrates the artist’s interest in creating movement through solid shape. She often spoke of the rhythmic qualities of painting. The work is also reminiscent of early Renaissance altarpieces in colour and shape.
